![]() Sarah Vowell talked about her book Assassination Vacation, published by Simon and Schuster. ![]() Following her remarks she answered questions from the audience. With Assassination Vacation, she takes us on a road trip like no other-a journey to the pit stops of American political murder and through the myriad ways. Vowell examines what these acts of political violence reveal about our national character and our contemporary society. Along the way, the author wrote about how presidential assassinations had become big business for historical tourism, benefiting places like inns and shops in each of the towns. Her book Assassination Vacation (2005) describes a road trip to tourist sites devoted to the murders of presidents Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley. For her research she visited the landmarks, museums, and locales surrounding each of the presidential assassinations which took her from Alaska to New York to Dry Tortugas Island (where several Lincoln conspirators were sentenced to prison) among other places.
